The film testifies to our vitality, our resilience, and the unbreakable bond that unites us to the land. For Nitassinan is not only the place we come from; it is a living part of ourselves. It has nourished our language, inspired our thoughts, and guided our steps. This film is a message of love for our territory, which saw our birth and which still accompanies us today, even in our dreams.

Joséphine Bacon
Joséphine Bacon is an Innu poet from Pessamit, born in 1947. A filmmaker and lyricist, she is considered one of Quebec’s leading authors. She has worked as a translator and interpreter with elders—those who hold traditional knowledge—and, with wisdom, has learned to listen to their words. She has written several poetry collections, including Bâtons à message · Tshissinuatshitakana (2009), for which she received the Montreal Poetry Market Readers’ Choice Award in 2010 for her poem “Dessine-moi l’arbre”; Nous sommes tous des sauvages (2011, in collaboration with José Acquelin); Un thé dans la toundra · Nipishapui nete mushuat (2013, finalist for the Governor General’s Award and finalist for the Grand Prix du livre de Montréal). Her collection, Uiesh · Quelque part*(2018), earned her the 2019 Booksellers’ Award. With Kau Minuat · Once Again, published in 2023, Joséphine Bacon reinvents her literary world. Moving away from Innu legends, the elder stateswoman of poetry settles into the space between seasons and slowly progresses through a meditation on the tree, time, and silence. In 2023, she received the prestigious Molson Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts for her invaluable contribution to literature.

Kim O'Bomsawin
A native of Odanak and a member of the Abenaki Nation, Kim O'Bomsawin earned a master’s degree in sociology before embarking on a career as a documentary filmmaker. She directed and wrote the screenplay for the feature-length documentary Je m'appelle humain (2020), a sensitive portrait of the Innu poet Joséphine Bacon. She also directed the four-part documentary series Telling Our Story, which was selected for TIFF in 2023. In 2024, she won the Best Canadian Documentary Award (VIFF) and the Magnus Isacsson Award (RIDM) for her film Ninan Auassat: Nous, les enfants. Since 2020, Kim has served as president of Nikan Productions (formerly Terre Innue) and Nikan Héritage (Productions Innu Assi).
