This program celebrates the very best of Quebec short filmmaking—fifteen years of passion, innovation, and emotion that have helped bring our cinema to audiences far beyond our borders.

Guillaume Harvey
Working as much in social satire as in comedy drama, Guillaume Harvey likes to take a slightly distanced look, stained with humor, on topics that are close to his heart.In 2015, he directed the short film Une Bombe, which had a great success in festivals (Best Screenplay at Fantasia, Best Fiction in Victoria, selections at Regard, Trouville, Rhode Island, Vallado-lid, etc.). He has since co-directed the anticipation comedy En attendant Pascal, screened in genre festivals in Quebec and around the world. Les sentiers battus is his third short film, and his most personal one.

Jean-Marc E.Roy and Philippe David Gagné met in Saguenay in 2002 and have been working together since 2008. Recipients of numerous grants from the CALQ and SODEC, their productions have been screened in several countries and have won awards around the world, in addition to being broadcast online and on American television (PBS).They followed their journey to Labrador in the series PICK-UP: À la rencontre d’un bout du monde, which won a Gémeaux Award in 2012. Their film Anata O Korosu, featured on SODEC and Telefilm Canada DVD releases and included in the Québec Gold selection, was presented in more than ten countries across five continents in 2012. Another web documentary series, COWBOY: Un rêve canadien, is also available on the TV5 website and was nominated for a Gémeaux Award in 2014.
Their latest collaborative project, Bleu Tonnerre, has already received five awards (REGARD, PCC! 2015) and was selected for the official competition of the 47th Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2015. The two filmmakers are currently working on feature-length projects (fiction for Gagné and documentary for Roy), as well as a documentary series for television.

Ariane made her director debut with her short film WILD SKIN, which has travelled in more than 50 festivals and won numerous awards. In 2017, she directed LITTLES WAVES, which had its world premiere at TIFF and its international premiere at the Berlinale. Then, her latest short film THE DEPTHS was also world premiered at TIFF 2019. In addition to devoting herself to writing her first feature film, Ariane just finished her next short film SHOOTING STAR which will begins its festivals tour in 2020.

While packing up before a move, cartoonist Zviane comes across an old audiocassette that plunges her back into her childhood fantasies and perceptions of the world. Based on a real-life recording, Sweet Childhood is a playful animated short with two narrators—namely, the Zvianes of past and present. Guided by her own voice from 30 years ago, the celebrated author of Les deuxièmes employs a range of techniques to evoke the naïve charm of children’s drawings, giving graphic form to her quirky, youthful narrative. The result is a hilarious short that questions just how « sweet » childhood really is. A slice of everyday life, courtesy of the Comic Strip Chronicles.
Zviane .
Born in Longueuil in 1983, cartoonist Zviane (a.k.a. Sylvie-Anne Ménard) is also a music teacher who studied composition at Université de Montréal. Since 2004, her many graphic novels and comic books—particularly Mauve ciel, Esquive and Le bestiaire des fruits—have enjoyed great popular and critical success in Quebec and Canada. Zviane took top honours at the first Concours québécois de bande dessinée (2016). She is also a two-time winner (in 2010 for Apnée and in 2014 for Les deuxièmes) of the Grand Prix de la Ville de Québec, which honours Quebec’s best French-language comic book of the year. Besides producing numerous fanzines and appearing in various newspapers, she is co-creator (with fellow cartoonist Iris) of the popular series L’ostie d’chat. She also has her own blog, zviane.com.

December 24, 1983, 10:50 p.m.; Julie and her cousins have eaten too much sugar, Santa Claus is running late, and Denis, alone in his car, dreads the thought of stepping back into his ex-in-laws’ home to pick up his children. Les grandes claques brings father and daughter together in a double coming-of-age story that is as biting as it is poetic.
Annie St-Pierre
Annie St-Pierre was born in St-Pascal-de-Kamouraska and studied film at the Université du Québec à Montréal. A documentary filmmaker fascinated by the parallel worlds that inhabit everyday life, she has notably directed Migration amoureuse, a co-production with France and Belgium that received the Pierre Perrault Award for Best Documentary Hope, as well as Fermières, a feature-length documentary presented as the closing film of the RIDM and widely released in theatres across Québec. Her first fiction short film, Les grandes claques, earned the award for Best French-language Screenplay at the Regard Festival. Two of her projects are currently in production: Le plein potentiel, an observational documentary about life coaches, and a new fiction short film, Les grandes claques. A champion of independent cinema, she also collaborates as a script consultant, casting director, actress, and producer with filmmakers who inspire her, including Matthew Rankin, Denis Côté, and Monia Chokri.
