In the 1990s, Laurence reveals to Fred, her girlfriend, that she is a woman. Against all odds - and perhaps even against themselves - they confront the prejudices of those around them, resist the influence of their families, and brave the fears of a society whose norms they disrupt. For ten years, they struggle to survive this transition and embark on an epic adventure whose price seems to be the loss of each other.

Denis Villeneuve
Born in Gentilly, near Trois-Rivières, Denis Villeneuve studied science at Cégep and film at the Université du Québec à Montréal. In 1991, he won the Europe-Asia Race with his bold documentary reports. The competition allowed the winner to make a film with the support of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). After accompanying Pierre Perrault to the Far North for his final film, Cornouailles, Villeneuve directed his first short film on the theme of multiculturalism: REW FFWD. At the same time, the young filmmaker directed music videos (some of which received awards), notably for Daniel Bélanger and Beau Dommage.In 1998, he wrote and directed his first feature film, Un 32 août sur Terre, which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and screened at thirty-five international festivals. In 2000, his second feature film, Maelström, was presented at around forty festivals (including Sundance and Toronto) and won dozens of awards, while introducing Marie-Josée Croze to a wider audience.
In 2008, Denis Villeneuve presented Next Floor, a highly unusual short film that won the Best Short Film Award at Critics’ Week in Cannes. Now recognized both in Québec and internationally, Villeneuve began work on a project inspired by the world of Gus Van Sant. In Polytechnique, the 1989 massacre at the École Polytechnique in Montréal is portrayed through the perspectives of two survivors, Valérie and François.
In 2010, the director followed with the film adaptation of Incendies, the acclaimed play by Wajdi Mouawad. Following this critical success, he directed two acclaimed thrillers starring Jake Gyllenhaal: Enemy and Prisoners.
In 2015, Denis Villeneuve presented his new feature film, Sicario, in Competition at Cannes, starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Without delay, he went on to direct Arrival, featuring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, allowing him to explore science fiction through the story of humanity’s encounter with extraterrestrial visitors.
In 2017, Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the iconic 1982 science-fiction film, was released, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford reprising his role. After this highly anticipated project, Villeneuve took on another ambitious undertaking: Dune, a new adaptation of the first part of Frank Herbert’s novel, originally published in 1965. The blockbuster grossed $391 million worldwide with a production budget of $165 million. A sequel, titled Dune: Part Two, was released in 2024.

Xavier Dolan
Xavier Dolan made his first on-screen appearance at the age of 4, appearing in several commercials, TV series, and feature films. At age 20, he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in I Killed My Mother, his first feature film, which was selected for the 41st Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Regard Jeune Prize, the Art Cinema Award, and the SACD Prize. These accolades were followed by some twenty other prestigious international awards, as well as the selection of J’ai tué ma mère as Canada’s entry in the race for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. Les amours imaginaires, his second film, was selected for the “Certain Regard” section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where it was received with great enthusiasm by audiences and went on to win, among other honors, the First Prize at the Sydney Film Festival.In 2012, Laurence Anyways, his third film, was selected for the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Canadian Film Award at TIFF. Tom at the Farm, released in theaters in 2013, won the FIPRESCI Critics’ Award at the 70th Venice Film Festival and was also featured in a special presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2014, his feature film Mommy received the prestigious Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Xavier Dolan also made a name for himself directing the music video for the band Indochine’s “Collège Boy” and for singer Adele’s “Hello.” In 2016, Xavier Dolan premiered It’s Only the End of the World*at Cannes and won the Grand Prix. His seventh feature film and first English-language film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, premiered at TIFF in 2018. Xavier Dolan returned to Cannes in 2019 with Matthias & Maxime, his eighth feature film. In 2021, he directed La Nuit où Laurier Gaudreault s’est réveillé, his first television series, an adaptation of Michel Marc Bouchard’s play, in which Xavier also appears as part of the cast. He also appeared as an actor in the series C’est comme ça que je t’aime in 2023.
